MUCFA, with funding from the Montana DNRC through an Inflation Reduction Act grant is offering support to four rural, low income, and/or low canopy communities with populations under 5,000. Assistance includes tree inventories, tree care and management plans, pruning, hazard tree removal and replacement, and tree planting for species diversification.

Welcome to the premiere edition of "Splinters", the quarterly newsletter of the Montana Urban and Community Forestry Association. Here we will share information and tips from around the state including upcoming events, good news, accomplishments and our favorite tree stories. ENJOY !

In 2026, Butte Silver Bow has completed two grant funded projects that have made a significant impact on the community. Both projects presented some unique challenges, but also they provided opportunities to improve tree canopy, public safety, soil health, and long-term health of Butte's urban forest.

More importantly, these projects are really a story about people and organizations that have helped BSB build an Urban Forestry program over the the last seven years. Apart from $1,000 to $3,000 per year from the BSB general fund, most years the Urban Forestry program has had little funding available to accomplish this work without outside aid..... New Funding Opportunity ( Application deadline October 20, 2026 )
The DNRC urban and community forestry program is excited to announce the launch of a new $5 million grant program to address emissions by expanding and enhancing tree canopy in Montana.
Led by the DNRC, the urban and community forestry initiative will invest in subawards to support approximately 20–70 urban and community forestry projects across the state. These projects will prioritize carbon sequestration through large‑scale tree planting, tree establishment, and long‑term tree care to produce measurable benefits for Montana residents and communities....Read more
Montana Tree Diversity from A to Z
MUCFA's recent statewide industry assessment identified the number one training need across Montana from 70 communities as being tree selection and diversification. As a result MUCFA has developed a Montana Tree Diversity presentation that will be available to cities, towns, tree boards and organizations across the state in the near future. As we fine tune the program we are identifying the needs and requests of both nurseries and consumers.
